Astrograss For Kids is an interactive, captivating performance
featuring the Astrograss brand of kids' music - a quirky mix of
bluegrass, folk, and humor. Highlights of the show include dance
contests set to high-energy fiddle hoedowns, musical interpretations
of the poetry of Shel Silverstein, and sing-alongs to some of the most
beloved songs of all time.
Astrograss is a four-piece group made up of musicians and educators
from the Brooklyn, NY community. The seeds for Astrograss for Kids
were planted in the public schools of New York City, where guitarist
Jordan Shapiro and bassist Tim Kiah were teaching - P.S.29 and P.S.363
in Brooklyn and Most Precious Blood School in Queens (they have since "retired" from full-time teaching to devote their time to Astrograss
For Kids and other musical and educational endeavors). Their classroom
experience with children, combined with the success of Astrograss (in
its "for-grownups" format), led the group to develop a new set of
repertoire specifically for kids. Astrograss for Kids was officially
launched with a wildly successful, bi-weekly series of children's
concerts at a Brooklyn café in 2005.
Since the original cafe performances, the band has gone on to win the
TONY Kids' Battle of the Bands contest at the Knitting Factory, has
recorded as Dan Zanes' backup band for the benefit album Bright Spaces
2, and has developed an educational and entertaining program for
school performances that exposes children to exciting music in a fun,
memorable way that leaves them with a greater appreciation of music.
Performance highlights from the past year include the Brooklyn
Children's Museum, Community Day at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, the
Higher Ground (Burlington, VT), Riverbank State Park, the Brooklyn
Botannical Garden, Symphony Space, the World Cafe Live (Philadelphia,
PA), Madison Square Park, several elementary schools, and joining Dan
Zanes onstage at a huge, sold-out benefit for Develop Don't Destroy
Brooklyn.
In their "for-grownups" format, Astrograss is one of the New York
area's premier acoustic acts. The band has become highly sought after
for weddings and private engagements in addition to their regular
performances in clubs, theaters, and festivals spanning the
northeastern United States. Check out the Astrograss website.
